Vancouver attacks targeting young Asian women

Vancouver police are warning the public about a group of thieves targeting Asian women in violent assaults along quiet streets and at bus stops.

One victim told CTV British Columbia that she was alone at a bus stop late last Friday, and she though she was alone. Suddenly she felt a tug on her purse.

"I was oblivious, and I think a lot of women would be oblivious as well," said Christina, 19, who requested her identity be protected.

Christina said she pulled her purse away from the man, who then punched her in the face.

Two men then ran off with her purse and $200 she had saved for Christmas shopping.

"I was caught off guard by that and I just couldn't do anything -- I was silent. I could have screamed or something but I was just standing there and they just ran off like the wind," she said.

Vancouver police say five related violent assaults occurred in the city's southeast end last week.

In some cases a baton-style weapon was used.

The victims were all Asian woman attacked from behind. In every case police say the thieves wanted their purses.

Const. Howard Chow said the most recent attack happened last Sunday. A woman was thrown against a bus shelter moments before a bus full of passengers arrived.

"They get the bus driver to stop, a number of people jump off the bus to try to help. Their hollers and screams manage to stop the assault," Chow said Thursday.

The suspect escaped and the victim ran away, but police are hoping a witness will help police in their investigation.

"We're hoping that somebody out there sees something and calls police," Chow said.

Christina says the attack has left her a scared, emotional wreck. She hopes her attackers are caught and put in jail.

"I was never really that afraid to go outside at night, but now I realize the world really is a really scary, dangerous place full of crooked people."

Christina described the suspects as Indo-Canadians dressed in black sweaters and baseball hats.
